7 common mistakes in quotes (and their fix)

Most lost quotes aren't down to a price problem, but a process mistake. These are the seven biggest.

Mistakes 1 to 3: the run-up

Responding too late (the customer's already gone), not really reading the question (a quote for the wrong work), and not asking for crucial information (so you have to guess or send it after). All three arise from haste — and are solved by automating the prep work.

Mistakes 4 and 5: the quote itself

Unclear structure (the customer doesn't understand what they get) and sending only a price without a story (so you're compared purely on price). A fixed, well-considered structure that's followed automatically solves both.

Mistakes 6 and 7: the aftermath

Not following up ('I don't want to push') and drawing no lessons (which quotes actually win?). This is where the easiest win is: a friendly follow-up after a few days and tracking what works. Things a system remembers flawlessly — and you don't, on a busy Tuesday.
