Why your quotes pile up (and what it costs you)

Nobody lets a job slip on purpose. Yet at most trade businesses there's always a request gathering dust somewhere.

The pattern

During the day you're on the job, so quotes are evening work. But in the evening you also want to eat, see your family, and unwind. So it slips to tomorrow. After three slips the request is a week old — and it's become awkward to respond at all.

What the customer does meanwhile

They asked three companies. The first with a clean quote sets the standard; whoever responds after a week seems not to need it. The job surprisingly often goes to the fastest, not the cheapest.

Breaking it

The solution isn't 'try harder' — you've made yourself that promise a hundred times. The solution is to shrink the work: if the draft is already there when you sit down in the evening, approving it is two minutes. That you can keep up.
